Vale of RheidolThe beautiful Vale of Rheidol line from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge survived British Rail's 1968 steam cull as it was a narrow gauge tourist line, but new management at Euston ordered it to be sold or closed as it was losing £1, 200 a year. So local managers, who were very "pro" V of R, schmoozed Transport Minister Barbara Castle, while she was at a Labour Party conference in Aberystwyth. She was very sympathetic and ordered it to be kept open. Driver Lee Milverton, guard Dick Jones and fireman Gwillym Morgan enjoy their reprieve in June 1968, with engine No. 8 Llywelyn. Last British Rail Steam: The crew of the vale of Rheidol steam train, the last one which British Rail will run at Devil's Bridge Station. L to R - driver Lee Milverton, Guard Dick Jones, and fireman Gwillym Morgan. June 1968
