Railways accidents - Potters Bar

A stricken Gresley class V2 locomotive lies on its side in the aftermath of the Potters Bar crash, on February 10, 1946. A local train to London King's Cross hit the buffers at Potters Bar station and its derailed coaches fouled the mainline. Then two northbound expresses hit the wreckage in rapid succession. Two passengers were killed and 17 injured. It happened when a signalman changed the points, causing the local train to derail while passing over them. A second Potters Bar train crash occurred in 2002, when seven people were killed after their train derailed because of points failure.
