Gresley A4 class No. 60009 Union of South Africa

Over the years, steam rail charters have become more ambitious, none more so than Railway Touring Company's annual 'The Great Britain' week-long tour. These encompass London, Penzance, north and west Scotland and back to London. Gresley A4 class No. 60009 Union of South Africa coasts into Newcastle Central with The Great Britain II, in May 2009. This locomotive was built to haul the London-Edinburgh streamlined Coronation express in 1937, and holds the steam speed record for travel between the two cities.
An A4 Pacific locomotive the "Union of South Africa" heads the Great Britain II railtour between Edinburgh and York, making a short stop at Newcastle Central Station.
