Air raid at Middlesbrough railway station, 1942

What started as just a routine August day at Middlesbrough station in 1942 ended in terror.
A German dayliht raid scored a direct hit on the overall roof, causing it to partially collapse, trapping a train underneath, crushing the coaches and wrecking the tank engine.
Seven people were killed. Just 40 hours afterwards the platforms have been cleared and the tracks repaired so the first train could steam out - a phenomenal tribute to the LNER railway's staff's dedication and guts.
