Tanfield Railway in the snowThe Tanfield Railway, which claims to be the world's oldest working railway is a North Eastern colliery system built to link collieries at Marley Hill, near Gateshead, with the River Tyne to ship coal. Incredibly, the oldest part of the route at Lobley Hill dates from c. 1647 and was operated for more than 300 years before closure in 1964. The oldest working section is Sunniside to Causey, laid on a 1725 wagonway, and the Causey to East Tanfield section dates from 1839. A steam train at Tanfield railway with a snow covered backdrop.
